| Noise Control for Diesel Power Plants |
Hessler Associates has performed many noise studies and mitigation analyses at base load plants
employing large diesel generators and also at numerous smaller diesel installations where the units
are primarily emergency back-ups in case of power interruption.
At the base load facilities, which are often the sole power supply for small but densely populated islands,
noise suppression is frequently a major concern because there are few things louder than the super-
charger on a huge industrial diesel engine. Consequently, we have been involved in the acoustical design
of numerous diesel halls where containment of noise from the equipment inside requires attention to not
only the building itself but also to the cooling air ventilation intakes and discharges, particularly when
fans are required.

Noise from exterior radiators, the diesel exhausts and other ancilliary systems can also produce severe
noise levels in the surrounding community and we are frequently called upon to develop practical noise
mitigation for these and other sources at existing facilities and also to prepare purchase specification
limiting the noise from new equipment to levels that are appropriate for the site location.

Diesels are also used as critical back-up power sources at telecommunications facilities, data processing
centers, hospitals and many other locations. Hessler Associates has provided the complete acoustical design
for many such installations when they are being newly built or expanded. In most cases, the ventilation
system for the generator room is the main concern with regard to off-site noise emissions.
