| Noise Control for HRSG's |
Heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) are one of the main noise sources in a typical combined cycle
power plant. Combustion turbine exhaust noise radiates from the side walls and exits out the top of the
stack; steam vents are often powerful noise sources, and peripheral equipment such duct burner control
skids, boiler feed pumps and blowdown systems can all be major noise problems.
Hessler Associates has worked closely with numerous HRSG OEM's over the past 15 years to
develop noise prediction software programs for future units based on extensive field measurements of
operating units.

The challenge of differentiating far field HRSG noise from that of other plant sources (such as the CTG
package and cooling tower, for example) has led us to develop special measurement and analysis
techniques to quantify HRSG noise as a discrete quantity for design verification and compliance
testing purposes.
Among these special approaches is a methodology for converting duct surface vibration acceleration to
near field sound pressure level that we developed through an empirical laboratory study. This method
allows near field noise guarantees, such as 85 dBA at 3 ft., to the verified - or the far field sound level
due only to the walls to be calculated. In most cases, without this technique, direct sound pressure
level measurements at 3 ft. from an HRSG would contain more background noise from extraneous
sources than from the unit itself.

In addition to predicting noise from future units and verifying compliance with contractual requirements,
we also have extensive experience diagnosing and solving such problems as low frequency resonances,
excessive stack noise levels, tonal noise issues and deficient atmospheric vent silencers.
